Bullet scars in Borambola’s walls remind us of a visit by the notorious bushranger Captain Moonlight. After his first release from Ballarat gaol, he turned his attentions to accruing enough ill-gotten wealth to flee the country for good. Captured by police in 1879, hanged in 1880, he never realised that dream.
In 1943 a fine young gelding named Hiraji was born in the stables at Borambola. Raised and trained in our lush Riverina paddocks, Hiraji went on to win the 1947 Melbourne Cup. Now the paddocks are home to some 50 rows of outstanding Shiraz grape vines.
In 1887 two Bunya Bunya trees were planted in the front lawn of the new homestead. Majestically they still stand tall giving welcome shade from the summer sun. A fine place to enjoy a refreshing glass of this classic award winning Chardonnay.
